Bio
The unassuming initial steps of writing songs for her High School’s productions paved the way for Debra’s first live performances with her family in their folk group (her parents ran a well respected folk club), at folk/acoustic clubs of Liverpool when she laid her roots firmly in Transatlantic Folk, Country, Acoustic and Americana Music.
Later a career in the creative world led Debra to a far reaching wide range of recording, writing, production and performances covering a myriad of projects for UK Theatre Tours, West End Theatre, UK TV’s BBC, ITV, E4 and Channel 4, UK Film, British Animation and other commissioned works.
During her time with Universal Music Publishing song writing collaborations for recording artists across all music genres led to Chart success in the UK, Europe, the USA, then worldwide with Debra’s very earliest works including cuts for artists from UK’s original ‘Pop Stars’ TV show resulting in the UK Top 10 ‘Come On Over’ for Hearsay’s Kym Marsh. Subsequently writing for artists from the original UK TV series ‘Pop Idol’ with Chart Hits ‘Not Sorry’ and ‘Are You Ready For Love’ and writing for the Spanish ‘Fame Academy’ winning artist attaining a Spanish No 1 with Chart Topper ‘I Dare You’.
Writing collaborations with music production teams include Rose & Foster, Metrophonic, Biffco, Mike Rutherford, Calum MacColl, Ash Howes, Ben Cullum and one co-writing project with DJ Producer Writers Lee Dagger and Marc JB led to Debra’s songwriting skills and vocals reaching in to the dance music genre for the song ‘St Tropez’ released as a single in the UK and featured in the documentary of the same name on British TV Channels E4 and CH4.
Chart success continued for Debra as both recording artist and songwriter when she was invited to bring her vocal sound and writing style to other dance music projects including releases with Ministry of Sound, Phonetic Recordings, Positiva, EMI Records in the UK and Europe, with Robbins in the USA and on other Major Labels worldwide. The Chart-Topping ‘Blue Water’ co-written with producers ‘Black Rock’ became English DJ Pete Tong’s ‘Essential Tune’ at BBC Radio 1 and featured on the soundtrack of the British Film/Comedy ‘It’s All Gone Pete Tong’. The MTV video featuring Debra and the release of ‘Blue Water’ in the USA led to Debra collaborating (again as co-writer and recording artist) with Ben Cullum and Ferry Corsten resulting in the songs ‘Forever’ and ‘Beautiful’ released in Europe and the USA with ‘Beautiful’ becoming a club-anthem across the USA during Ferry’s summer tours.
In contrast Debra has written extensively for both children’s animation and children’s theatre in the UK and Europe. Music written for children includes ‘Everybody C’mon’ for BBC’s/CBebbies ‘The Tweenies’.
A natural performer who genuinely connects with audiences Debra is equally at ease with only her guitar in small intimate venues like Nettlebed Folk Club, to concert performances a guest artist with The Ronnie Scott’s All Stars Band at St. Martin In The Fields, London; or at various UK Music Festivals, the UK Country Radio Awards, at ‘Voices For Hospices’; or in leading roles in musical theatre tours across the UK, roles on British TV and at many other live music events/tours across the UK and Europe, including singing backing vocals for Lisa Stansfield in Italy.
Throughout her varied music career the true heartbeat of music, songwriting and singing for Debra has always been Transatlantic Folk, Country, Acoustic and Americana music.
Writing and producing her debut album ‘Child Of The Universe’ and the EP ‘New Beginning’, both released independently through Debra Andrew Music brought Debra back to her most authentic self, ever closer to those early seeds planted in earnest during her formative years and her introduction to live music with her parents, finding the joy of being a storyteller with a passion for music and sharing a song or two.
